Ep. 462: Yacht Rock
I honestly wonder if that, to some degree, is in the minds of some NBA coaches. Perhaps in another form, they may use a different word for it, but ultimately you look like a bit of a douche playing that "foul" game.
It's exploiting the rulebook.
Kobe was doubled right off, foul there and the lakers will foul on the inbound after the freethrows with 8-9 seconds left. It will be on the Magic at that point to get the inbounds to someone that will hit both shots. Then its Laker ball with 6-7 seconds, Magic up by one, two, or three all hinging on their freethrow shooting...
The big play was Kobe makes the pass out of the double team to a relatively open Trevor Ariza, who then had an easy cross court to a wide open Fisher. Meanwhile Pau and Lamar are both hugging the left corner of the baseline keeping the floor wide open. The extra space of the full court meant all the difference. Nelson is stuck at mid court looking at a wide open Ariza receive the ball but he knows his man is Fisher. He hesitated but he did get over to Fisher. The play basically cleared out the right side for Fisher with a smaller defender on him that had played a few quarters in the last 4 months. As well as force that defender to at least think about an open Trevor Ariza before committing to Fisher. I think it went as planned. It allowed for the possibility of Nelson trying to foul Ariza in which case, if Ariza gets the pass off, Fisher is completely unguarded on the right side. I dont think Kobe was intended to shoot on that play, it was Ariza or Fisher all along. Kobe was to draw the double and make it a two on one fast break to the three point line.
The counter would have been to drop the double team and let the Lakers kill some clock getting it up the court, then foul as soon as someone passes over or dribbles across the halfcourt line. The kind of thing experience teaches players to react to (I just cannot get enough of bashing SVG by mentioning the value of experience). The Magic have to expect their freethrows to go in. Anything else is the dreaded prevent defense (which as we all know is only good at preventing whoever runs it from winning).
Van Gundy seems to think he can coach his way through if his players are performing badly. That won't work he has to coach them like they are going to do the right things, if they don't oh well but all the coaching in the world wont make up for it.
Maybe you should question. Why JN played Fisher the way he did at the end of regulation? Why the Magic couldn't hit a FT when it counted? Why the Magic couldn't hold a 12 point half time lead? Why RL was a no-show? Why SVG thinks experience has nothing to do with winning a championship? Why they didn't play RA? Why the Magic played the in bounds in the back court the way they did at the end of regulation? Why SVG thinks that in-bounds play will haunt him forever?
There's a million more questions that could be asked like the ones I posed, all of which would have one thing in common.
None have anything to do with the refs!
But, I don't think the douche factor was it. SVG has made it quite clear that he's not worried about being a douche.
Kareem didn't call D12 "unpredictable", he called him "predictable"
"He's still offensively kind of raw," Abdul-Jabbar said Wednesday. "He doesn't have a go-to move yet. Right now, he's kind of predictable."
I don't see how people could stop watching the Jones after their team is out. How do you just go cold turkey like that? Reducing your drunk phone calls I can see. But, I'm dreading that last night ended because it's a painful transition out of the season.
Giving it to him in the post worked against Cleveland because none of the Cleveland bigs had both height and athleticism. Gasol and Bynum are both big and athletic and you see the results: .471 FG%, 4.25 TO's per game. We saw that Kendrick Perkins was also able to control him. I'm just not sure passing it into Howard for him to create his own shot is a good offensive strategy. As Skeets has been saying, he can be effective on the pick and roll. And he's good at getting good position right under the basket. But Orlando's often slow finding him when he has that good position, and then we get 3 second violations. So I say, use him sparingly on offense. Give it to him when the play or his position creates a dunk, layup, or INFANT hook. I just don't believe in this running hook from 7 feet out.
First, Patrick Swayzee was wrong in Roadhouse, Pain does hurt.
Second, I am not a fan of the Orlando Magic and I don't know a lot about
basketball. But I do know you typically need to make your free throws and
not turn it over for your team to prevail.
Third, I hate the f*cking Los Angeles Lakers. And while I could wax
eloquently of the past decade of Laker domination that has led to my hate, I
prefer to provide a simple and certainly not comprehensive list of
why it sucks that LA won a championship this year.
Kobe Bryant has an angel wing tattoo and drives a Ferrari.
Most players can chew gum without it screaming "I am an arrogant c*ck".
Most players can have a jaw without it screaming "I am an arrogant c*ck".
Because Charles Barkley is right that no team deserves to "half ass" their
way to a championship.
The homoerotic circle jerk that Kobe gets surrounded with every time he
comes off the court.
How does candy trump pizza for sustenance?
I like Red Auerbach having the record.
Kobe - Colorado Springs, CO.
Cheap Shot Bob Horry.
Kobe snitching on Karl Malone's extracurricular activities.
Because it rewards Jerry West's ethically challenged behavior of giving
Gasol to LA for nothing.
Kobe never told me how Shaq's ass taste.
The Lakers may be defending champs for some time given the potential for
lockout.
Kobe gets to meet Barack Obama.
Teams that are arrogant but lazy, have an entitlement complex, and lack
humility should not prevail.
Plastic city gets to smile - never mind, since that last facelift, they
never stopped.
Yesterday I cancelled my cable for a long break from the basketball world. Nice
work on the show this year Jones. Given the threat of a strike, you may be
reporting on the one-on-one tourney very soon. 10 players square off to
make a bunch of cash and Kobe Bryant will not prevail in that competition.

On the inbounds with 10.8 in regulation:
